“80% of your immune system lives in your gastrointestinal tract and probiotics can help. Approximately 500 different species of bacteria live inside you. The weight of these bacteria is about two to three pounds.” Institute of Health Sciences.
What we eat and drink directly affects our immune system by way of our intestinal health. We truly are what we eat (and drink) and the quality of that food and drink has a huge impact on our immune system. There could be no truer quote regarding food and medicine than that from Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”
Kombucha, a fermented tea packed full of probiotics (good bugs for the gut) can attribute to making sure your gut is getting what it needs and in turn your immune system what IT needs. Adding herbs and spices to that mix just adds to the healthful affects on the body. Whether you are flavoring your first fermentation with herbs or the second fermentation, adding herbs and tisanes (herbal teas) will open up the flavor possibilities as well as the benefits of drinking kombucha.
Did you ever have a cup of green tea and think, "WOW! That's bitter!"
That was totally me! Why would anyone drink this horribly bitter tea. Sure it's good for you, it's helpful in weight loss. Green tea is high in antioxidants and a wealth of other good for you things. But it was soooo bitter!
Turns out that green tea isn't so bad if it is steeped the right way! A little attention to the steeping time and temperature will go a long way in making the perfect cuppa green tea.
March will be finishing up here soon and April is headed on in. We have also had some beautiful sun breaks but a whole lot of that liquid sunshine has been coming our way. That along with a thunderstorm or two and all the plants are looking vividly green and the leaves on the trees are coming on out. Many of the trees and plants are blooming, Spring is here for sure!
In the hoop house...
Not too much change in the hoop house through the month. We had some good planting weather in February with plenty of sunshine. Since then its been wet, very wet with not much sun and most of our seedlings and plants are fairy stagnant for now. The cool weather crops don't seem to mind too much and there are still plenty of bugs after our tiny plants.

The Fermentation Station ...
This week we start a new adventure in our kombucha brewing. Sadly our homemade starter from GT's Kombucha turned into a vinegar scoby and we have been drinking vinegar for a few weeks :( Thankfully we received a Tibetan Scoby that is working out wonderfully. Much better tasting! We are second fermenting the tea here with some Pinot Noir grapes from Thistle Hill Vineyards.
In the farm kitchen...
Eggs, Eggs, Eggs, and more Eggs! Go chickens go! We had quite the amount of meals with eggs in them last week I might say. Its time to get our little egg stand down at the end of the farm driveway.
